The Presidential Medallion

Among the world's universities, for many hundreds of years a medallion or chain of
office has been a part of the academic regalia of the chief administrative officer.
In 1967, on the occasion of the inauguration of its fifth president, the University
                           of Alaska joined that tradition.
The Presidential Medallion of the University of Alaska, worn the first time by President Robert W. Hiatt, was a gift from the University of Alaska Alumni Association. Its design is based upon the University of Alaska seal. The medallion was designed
and wrought in sterling silver by noted silversmith Glen C. Simpson, associate professor
                           of art.
